Story Line:
The Yashraj Films produced with filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee is all geared up to take over screens with film, ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!’, this Friday(April 3). The film, starring Sushant Singh Rajput, is based on Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s fictional
character, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi. Byomkesh is an intelligent detective from Kolkata who solves many mysteries that
were unsolved by the police.Expectations are sky-high, especially from fans of the series. If you are still
unsure about watching, we lay five reasons before you that hopefully change your mind.
Here are some points of film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, which makes this film in a watchlist:
1. Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is original. And the meticulously crafted stories are constructed on plots that retain their 'Bengaliness' to the core. The cultural context is so evidently created that one would get a significantly deep understanding of the Calcutta we have rarely seen on celluloid.2. Ever since Sushant Singh Rajput made his Bollywood debut with Abhishek Kapoor’s ‘Kai Po Che’, Sushant has been named an a rising star. He was quite noteworthy in ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ and ‘PK’, where he played a small role. However, the actor who has so far been seen in contemporary roles, will be portrayed in a totally different avatar in the film and One of the most talented filmmakers in the industry, Dibakar Banerjee has proved himself time and again with films like ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ and ‘Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye’, that went on to win National Awards. Having previously taken up social issues in his films, this is the first time that Banerjee will be doing an all out entertainer.
3. Unlike many Hollywood detective thrillers where the focus is primarily on systematic use of scientific tools and techniques and the approach is very organized, Byomkesh is unmistakably desi. Not that Byomkesh's attitude is not controlled or methodical. He is humble, unassuming, quick-witted crackerjack. But when one realizes that Byomkesh is trying his best to be the perfect private investigator in the pre independence era of 1930s, one instantly gets to imagine not just the turmoil-ridden period of the British Raj in India, but also the bare minimalistic infrastructural limitations that this politicized period was riddled with. And so, Byomkesh uses his intelligence and adept skills to solve the cases.
4. Since ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!’ is a major whodunit film, the identity of the villain is still under wraps. And it would undoubtedly be delightful to watch the mystery unfold and reveal the baddie.Though the film is a based on the Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s fictional character, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, this is the first time that we actually get to visualize what the detective really was like. The film begins right at the origin, with the first case of Byomkesh.
5. The film follows the core structure of whodunit --- the chase, the red herrings, the slow cooked suspense leading up to a grand reveal. There’s a generous spray of blood too, that underlines just how violent those times were. But deviating once again from formula, Dibakar’s exposition scene is only a gateway to the climax. While the surprise element is welcome, there seems to be a stretch there and a theatrical one too. And it doesn't entirely free your mind of questions either. After a stunning build-up, this is a mild let down.
But Dibakar keeps you guessing till the very end in this unabashedly noir Bengal pulp drama. And his leading man Sushant shows just why he was fit for the job. He gets the body language right and brings the right amount of boyish edge this amateur detective needs. He’s no superhero, he throws up at the sight of a rotten body, he withdraws into a shell when he realizes he has been made a fool of. The actor adequately brings out every shade of his character. He never sweeps you off your feet, he doesn't even mean to, it takes you a while to like him but he earns your trust and you are by his side throughout.
6. The detective spy thriller, based on the popular Bengali detective created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, features Bollywood's Sushant Singh Rajput in lead. There are two kinds of audiences for this film --- those who know Byomkesh and those who don’t. Dibakar has a revelation for both. That’s one case neatly solved.
